End of Summer Activities in San Francisco: Get Outside Before Fall
August in San Francisco is legitimately one of the best months of the year. The fog finally breaks for real, the evenings turn golden and long, and the whole city has this particular energy — like everyone is suddenly aware that there are only a few good weekends left before the season turns. If you've been putting off that paddle, that Bay tour, that game-day kayak, that sauna session — this is the month to stop waiting. Things to do in SF in August are plentiful, but the ones that take you outside and onto the water hit differently when the light is this good. Here's how we'd spend the rest of the season if we were you.
Rent a Kayak and Do That Thing You've Been Putting Off
Be honest. You've been meaning to get out on the Bay all summer. Maybe you walked past Crane Cove a few times. Maybe someone mentioned it and you said "yeah, we should do that." August is the month where all of that stops being a plan and starts being a memory. And here's the good news: it's actually the best time to go. The summer crowds that showed up in June and July start thinning out, but the conditions stay excellent. The mornings are especially good — calm water, clear skies, and the Bay basically to yourself.
A self-guided kayak or SUP rental from Crane Cove Park is the easiest way to make it happen. Show up, grab your gear, and head out at your own pace. Single kayaks are $45/hr, tandems $60/hr (2-hour minimum), and SUP rentals are $40/hr for adults. Wildlife is active out here year-round, but late summer is a great time to catch seals and herons along the Dogpatch shoreline. Don't overthink it. Just go.

Take a Bay Bridge Paddle Tour Before Fall
If you're going to do one guided tour before the season winds down, make it the Bay Bridge Kayak/SUP Tour ($124/person, 2 hours). In August, the timing is perfect. The light at golden hour on the Bay in late summer is the kind of thing you'll describe to people for years, and the Bay Bridge looks like a completely different structure when you're paddling underneath it in that warm evening glow. Wildlife is active — harbor seals, great blue herons, pelicans, and the occasional bat ray beneath the surface. Your guide will handle the route and the storytelling while you handle the paddling.
This tour runs for experienced paddlers. It fills up on weekends, and dates in August and early September go fast as people try to lock in their last big Bay experience of the season. Book sooner rather than later — this is not the one to wait on.
Watch the Giants in the Final Stretch From McCovey Cove
September is right around the corner, which means the Giants are heading into the final weeks of the home schedule. There is genuinely no better way to take in those last home games than from the water. Our Mission Creek Boathouse at 401 Berry Street is a 10-15 minute paddle from McCovey Cove, and we rent kayaks on every Giants home game day — single kayaks at $45/hr, tandems at $60/hr.
No experience needed. We give everyone a quick briefing before they launch, and the paddle through Mission Creek is calm and straightforward. Launch windows open 30 minutes before first pitch. If you've never caught a game from the Cove, the final home stretch of the season is the time to do it. Don't let September arrive and realize you missed your chance.
Book a Private Event Before the Season Closes
August is peak season for private group events, and for good reason. End-of-summer corporate off-sites, birthday parties before school resumes, bachelorettes with a view — private paddles on the Bay are one of the most memorable things you can put together for a group of people in SF. We host private events for 5 to 50 people at Crane Cove Park and Mission Creek, with kayaking, paddle boarding, or both.
Dates in August and Labor Day weekend fill fast. If your team has been talking about doing something together before summer ends, or if you have a celebration coming up that deserves something better than a bar reservation, now is the time to reach out. The Bay has a way of making any group feel like a team within about 20 minutes.
Go Night Paddling on the Full Moon
The Full Moon Paddle ($124/person, 60 minutes) is one of our most requested experiences, and August and September are two of the best months to do it. Launching from Crane Cove as the full moon rises over the Bay is surreal — the water picks up the light, the city glows on the horizon, and the whole thing feels completely removed from the regular pace of San Francisco. It's calm, it's beautiful, and it's one of those experiences that's genuinely hard to describe to someone who hasn't been on the water at night.
This one is for experienced paddlers, and it books up quickly each month. Check the calendar and grab a spot while there are still full moon dates left in the season.
Start Your Sauna Habit Now
Here's a counterintuitive truth: the sauna at Crane Cove hits hardest in late August and September, when the air outside starts to cool and the contrast between inside and outside finally means something. If you've been curious about it all summer, this is the right time to start. Public sessions are $25 for sauna only, $35 with the cold plunge — one hour, shared, max four people. The vibe is earthy and unpretentious — think a beach town in San Pancho, not a hotel spa. Warm wood, honest heat, and the particular satisfaction of sitting still after a day outside.
If you try it and love it (most people do), memberships start at $75/month for unlimited daily sessions. Late August is actually the ideal time to start a sauna habit — you get it going while the weather is still good, and by the time fall arrives it's already part of your week.
Don't Wait on This
Summer in SF doesn't last forever. The golden evenings, the calm mornings on the Bay, the Giants games, the full moon over the water — all of it has a shelf life. Book something this week. Pick the one that's been calling to you and go do it before the season turns.
Dogpatch Paddle & Kayak holds a 5.0-star rating across every platform — and every one of those reviews came from someone who decided to stop waiting and just go. Book your late-summer kayak rental at book.peek.com, or if you want to close out the season the right way, tack on a sauna session after you come off the water.
The light in August is too good to waste.
