Best Things to Do on SF Bay This Summer
Here's something most tourists — and honestly a lot of locals — don't realize: SF summer doesn't really get going until July. The fog burns off, the water turns glassy in the mornings, and the Bay comes alive in a way that makes you wonder why you spent the first half of the year indoors. There are a lot of ways to spend a summer day in San Francisco. You can do the Alcatraz boat, grab a clam chowder bowl on Fisherman's Wharf, rent a bike across the Golden Gate. All of those are fine. But the best thing to do this summer is get out on the Bay itself — actually on it, not just near it. At Dogpatch Paddle & Kayak, we're right here at Crane Cove Park and Mission Creek, and we've been putting people on the water all summer long. Here's what people are doing, and why every one of these is worth your time.
Rent a Kayak or SUP and Explore at Your Own Pace
If you've ever walked along the Dogpatch waterfront and thought "I should be out there," this is your move. Renting a kayak or SUP from Crane Cove Park is the most straightforward way to get on SF Bay — no guide required for confident paddlers, no set route, no rush. You pick up your gear, get a quick orientation from our crew, and head out whenever you're ready.
Summer mornings are genuinely special out here. The water goes glassy before the afternoon wind picks up, and it's not unusual to spot harbor seals, great blue herons, and pelicans within the first few minutes on the water. The whole Dogpatch shoreline opens up in front of you in a way you just can't experience from land.
Single kayaks start at $45/hr, tandem kayaks at $60/hr (2-hour minimum), and SUP rentals are $40/hr for adults or $35/hr for youth. All gear included. No previous experience? No problem — we'll set you up right.
Take a Guided Bay Tour
If you want someone to show you around, our guided tours are the move. Two stand out for summer: Tour the Bay (90 minutes, $124/person) takes you along the waterfront on a conditions-led route, past the Dogpatch industrial waterfront and into the open Bay, with your guide calling out the wildlife and the history of what you're seeing.
The Bay Bridge Kayak/SUP Tour (2 hours, $124/person) is something else entirely. There are very few things in San Francisco that hit the way paddling in the shadow of the Bay Bridge does — it's massive, it's iconic, and you're right underneath it on a kayak. The tour runs out to the bridge and back along the Embarcadero shoreline, with seals and herons making regular appearances. People who've lived in SF for years tell us it's the first time the Bay felt truly real to them. That's the whole point.
Both tours are open to experienced paddlers. Book ahead — these fill up fast on summer weekends.
Try E-Foiling — SF's Most Talked-About New Activity
This is the one people keep asking about, and for good reason. E-foiling is electric hydrofoil boarding — you stand on a board that lifts completely out of the water and flies above the surface, powered by a quiet electric motor underneath. It sounds wild because it is. The first time the board rises up and you're hovering above the Bay, it's genuinely unlike anything else.
The learning curve is quicker than you'd think. Most people are up and hovering within their first session, and the feeling once you're there is completely addictive. Sessions are $225 and run out of Crane Cove Park. If you're looking for one thing to do on SF Bay this summer that you haven't done and probably can't do anywhere else nearby, this is it. Come stoked and ready to get wet — it's worth every bit of it.
Catch a Giants Game From the Water
This one is for game day. Our Mission Creek Boathouse at 401 Berry Street — literally a 10-15 minute paddle from McCovey Cove — is open for kayak rentals on every Giants home game. You rent a kayak, launch from the dock, and paddle through Mission Creek out to the Cove just as the game gets underway. It's one of the most uniquely San Francisco things you can do, full stop.
No experience required. We give everyone a briefing before they head out, and the water between Mission Creek and McCovey Cove is calm and straightforward. Single kayaks are $45/hr, tandems $60/hr, with launch windows starting 30 minutes before first pitch. If you've been to a lot of Giants games and you're ready for a different kind of day at the ballpark, this is it.
Book a Private Group Event on the Bay
Whether it's a corporate off-site, a birthday, or a bachelorette party that wants to actually be memorable, a private event at Dogpatch Paddle is one of the best things you can do for a group of people in SF. We host private paddling events for 5 to 50 people at both Crane Cove Park and Mission Creek, with kayaking, paddle boarding, or a mix of both.
A typical two-hour private event goes like this: people arrive, get geared up, get a short briefing on the beach, and then head out onto the Bay together with a guide. The water does something to group energy that conference rooms and rooftop bars simply can't touch. Catering, swag, and photo and video support are all available as add-ons. If your team has been talking about doing something different and actually fun, reach out and let's make it happen.
End Every Bay Day in the Sauna
The sauna at Crane Cove is one of those things you don't expect until you're sitting in it, looking out at the waterfront, wondering why you haven't been coming here every week. The vibe is earthy — think a beach town in San Pancho, Mexico, not a hotel spa. Warm cedar, a cold plunge if you want it, and the particular satisfaction of using your body all day and then letting it slow back down.
Public sessions are $25 (sauna only) or $35 with cold plunge — one hour, shared space, max four people. It's the perfect close to a Bay day. Walk in off the water, rinse off, and sit. The Bay will still be out there tomorrow.
